On June 3rd 2018 the “Volcán de Fuego” (Fire Volcano) erupted and up to that date the official death toll was 100 people. This is the deadliest eruption reported in Guatemala since 1929. According to CONRED (National Coordinator for Reduction of Disasters in Guatemala) a total of 1,7 million persons were affected and over 4000 were evacuated. CIDAL joined in the relief efforts: a team of physicians led by Dr. Hugó Ávila, Chief Medical Officer Northern Region CIDAL, assisted in a Camp in San Juan Alotenango, one of the several affected municipalities, visiting several days and bringing much needed medications and medical attention to victims.
